Puerto Rico was awakened this morning to a shaking earthquake. May 16, 2010, a moderate earthquake struck in Puerto Rico. According to the USGS, the Puerto Rico earthquake was a magnitude 5.8.

The epicenter of the quake was 3 miles from Moca, PR and Aceitunas, PR. So far there are no damage reports due to the earthquake in Puerto Rico this morning. Also, there are no reports of any injuries.

However, any shaking is disconcerting especially considering the earthquakes that have been felt around the world this year. Earthquakes in 2010 have caused destruction and death like the one in Haiti, and are not taken lightly. Puerto Rico sets very near a fault line and has experienced strong quakes in the past. In 1918 there was a magnitude 7.5 earthquake in Puerto Rico that caused a tsunami killing 110 people. Hopefully the people of Puerto Rico will not experience any more earthquakes in the near future.
